Alternative Medicine Treatments for Breast Cancer - Cayce and Others

AbstractAlthough breast cancer is potentially lethal, it can be cured if the right steps are taken in a timely manner. Alternative medicine can be a helpful treatment approach even in severe cases where the patient is not expected to survive. This paper includes discussion of breast cancer and alternative treatments for breast cancer. The alternative treatments discussed in this paper are not an exhaustive list; however, the treatments are believed to have much potential for successfully treating breast cancer. Introduction

Breast cancer is an illness where cancer forms in the tissues of the breast (National Cancer Institute, 2010). There are various kinds of breast cancer such as ductal carcinoma in situ, lobular carcinoma in situ, invasive ductal carcinoma, invasive lobular carcinoma, inflammatory breast cancer, triple negative breast cancer, mixed tumors, medullary carcinoma, metaplastic carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, pagets disease of the nipple, tubular carcinoma, papillary carcinoma, adenocystic carcinoma, phyllodes tumor, and angiosarcoma (American Cancer Society, 2010) (National Cancer Institute, 2010). Although breast cancer is potentially lethal, it can be cured if the right steps are taken in a timely manner. In particular, alternative medicine can be a helpful treatment approach even in cases where the patient is not expected to survive the cancer.

The following is a discussion of breast cancer. Included in the discussion are the causes of breast cancer, the traditional medicine treatments currently being used for breast cancer, why an alternative medicine approach is needed, and a discussion of various alternative medicine treatments that have been discussed in the medical literature. The alternative treatments discussed in this paper are not an exhaustive list; however, the alternative treatments discussed in this paper are treatments that have much promise for successfully treating breast cancer.

Information to Keep in Mind While Reading This Paper

The President of the United States, President Obama, has said that it is his goal that cancer will be cured (as cited in Landau, 2009). I believe that President Obama's goal can be achieved and I think cancer can be cured. It is true that in news reports, some cancer specialists have said that instead of finding a cure, a more realistic scenario is that certain cancers that are fatal today will move into the realm of chronic illnesses (as cited in Landau, 2009). Also there was a news article which reported that Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, stated that it is possible that people in the future will be able to live in peaceful coexistence with the cancer as opposed to the cancer continuing to advance" (as cited in Landau, 2009). However, I think that if there is sufficient focus on creating the right conditions for healing in the body, one need not worry about ever having to live in peaceful coexistence with cancer because if the environment inside the body is sufficiently healthy, the cancer cells will no longer be able to exist inside of the body. Thus, instead of fatal cancers moving into the realm of chronic illness or instead of people having to live in peaceful coexistence with cancer, I think that outright cure of cancer / eradication of cancer from the body is actually possible and I think that this could happen for many people on a wide scale much sooner than anyone thinks if the right treatments were implemented on a wide scale.

In response to the Presidents goal of curing cancer, I submit the following as an explanation of possible cures for breast cancer. There is much information in the literature and I feel some optimism that these alternative medicine treatments can workif the traditional medical establishment is honest and gives it more of an opportunity. Please note that in every case of cancer the healing challenge is to find the right combination of treatments to improve the bodys chemical environment (or improve the bodys electrochemical environment, electrochemical is perhaps a more appropriate descriptor) so that the cancer can no longer continue in the body. One problem that exists is that thus far, it appears that traditional medicine has yet to figure out a consistent way to improve the electrochemical environment in the body so that cancer no longer occurs. It is true that chemotherapy exists and is used. However, with chemotherapy some people survive but many people nonetheless die of cancer even though they did chemotherapy. Also, research has been shown that chemotherapy is not safe for brain cells (see paragraphs below). Also, medications have their limitations because medications do not work permanently. Also, every person is different. For example, the particular combination of traditional or alternative medical treatments that will work to cure cancer will tend to vary from person to person depending on the severity of the cancer. The particular treatment steps that are required to bring about a cure will vary from person to person depending on the extent that the electrochemical environment in the body is abnormal in that particular individual person. Some people may have extremely abnormal electrochemical conditions in the body while others may only have slightly abnormal electrochemical conditions for example.

This paper will present many treatments that have been described in the literature as being applicable to curing cancer. It is possible that some people with cancer may need most or all of the treatments while some people may only need some of them depending on the specific aspects of their particular cancer case. Keep in mind that I'm not necessarily saying that traditional medicine is totally useless. But I am saying that I do feel that more emphasis and attention should be given to alternative medicine methods. The following paragraphs include the following: a discussion of the causes of breast cancer, traditional medicine treatments for breast cancer, why alternative medicine treatments are needed, and alternative medicine treatments for breast cancer.

Causes of Breast Cancer or Factors in its Occurrence

Breast cancer is related to or affected by excess estrogen (Hoffman, 2010). Alcohol, drugs or environmental toxins, inappropriate diet, or liver impairment can cause excess estrogen (Hoffman, 2010) and potentially breast cancer. Xenoestrogens (such as PCB's, pesticides, DDT, DDE, chlorine, or hormone residues in meat and dairy products) can also cause excess estrogen (Hoffman, 2010) and potentially breast cancer. Anything that causes problems with liver function will cause excess estrogen (and potentially breast cancer) because the liver has a detoxifying function which tends to prevent estrogen excess (Hoffman, 2010).

Other factors which cause or which tend to increase risk for breast cancer include the following: smoking or exposure to second hand smoke, being age 55 or older, having already had a history of breast cancer, having had past radiation treatment to the chest area, having dense breast tissue, having already had a non-cancerous or benign breast problem of some kind, having started menstruation before age 12, having had menopause after age 55, having children after age 30, having been treated with diethylstilbestrol (DES) to prevent miscarriage, using birth control pills, having post menopausal hormonal therapy (PHT), taking estrogen supplementation long term over 10 years, being overweight, and not getting enough exercise (American Cancer Society, 2010). Being exposed to chemicals such as formaldehyde or benzene (Cornell University Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors, 2010), plastic from food storage containers (as cited in Meikle, 2005), radiation or exposure to nuclear weapons (American Cancer Society, 2006), or emotions or stress (Dharmananda, 1999) are also factors that are involved in breast cancer. Drinking just a few drinks per week has been associated with increased risk of having breast cancer (American Cancer Society, 2010). The risk of breast cancer is particularly higher in women who do not have sufficient folate in the diet (American Cancer Society, 2010).

Drinking milk or eating cheese in the United States in the past could have put one at risk for cancer because rBGH (artificial growth hormones) were injected into cows to increase milk production (Cancer Prevention Coalition, 2003). In fact, the problem was so serious that, at one point, milk produced in the United States was actually banned in Europe and Canada because of the rBGH content in the milk (Cancer Prevention Coalition, 2003). Some milk in the United States was specially labeled "no rBGH" and that milk was reportedly safe; however, if the milk was not labeled, then there was danger that rBGH was in the milk (Cancer Prevention Coalition, 2003).

More recently, many people expressed that they did not want artificial hormones in their milk because of the health risks associated with consuming products with artificial hormones (Grand Rapids Press, 2008). Changes have been made in such a way that, at this time, milk in the United States is reportedly free of artificial growth hormones (Grand Rapids Press, 2008). However, if one consumed milk in the United States at any time in the past when rBGH was being injected into cows and if one was diagnosed with cancer during those years when rBGH was being injected into cows, then it is possible that consumption of milk during those years could have been a factor that put the person at risk for cancer due to the presence of rBGH in the milk.

Breast cancer can sometimes be genetic (National Cancer Institute, 2010). For example, five to ten percent of breast cancer cases are genetic in origin (National Cancer Institute, 2010). In addition, it is worth noting that breast cancer is not solely a women's disease because some men do carry a breast cancer gene (National Cancer Institute, 2010) and they may not even be aware of it because they have never been tested for the breast cancer gene. Men who have a gene for breast cancer are in fact at risk of getting breast cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2010). Thus, breast cancer is not solely a women's disease. Breast cancer can be a men's disease too (National Cancer Institute, 2010).

Traditional Medicine Treatments for Breast Cancer

Surgery (mastectomy, lumpectomy), radiation therapy, hormonal therapy, lymph node dissection, targeted therapies such as [for example] Herceptin, and chemotherapy are traditional medicine treatments for breast cancer that are being done at this time (BreastCancer.org, 2009). Dichloroacetate (DCA), a low cost drug previously used to address metabolic problems, is another cancer treatment that is being considered in traditional medicine (Coghlan, 2007). DCA reportedly shrinks tumors and kills nearly all cancers without harming healthy cells; however DCA also reportedly sometimes causes walking problems or numbness and use of DCA as a potential cancer drug is still in the research/testing phase (Coghlan, 2007). In addition to the foregoing traditional treatments, traditional medicine has acknowledged that diet, controlling body weight, and exercise are important in cancer prevention (American Cancer Society, 2010).

Why Alternative Medicine Treatment is Needed

There needs to be more exploration of alternative medicine treatment for cancer because chemotherapy has been shown to be unsafe (for example, see Dietrich et. al, 2006), and because other traditional therapies or medications for cancer have not worked sufficiently.

For example, pertaining to chemotherapy, a study done by Dr. Joerg Dietrich and colleagues (while in the work group of Mark Noble) at University of Rochester (New York) found that chemotherapy drugs that are used to treat many common cancers actually "causes long term damage to the brains of mice by killing neural stem cells and oligoendrocytes which produce myelin insulation needed for normal neuron function" (Dietrich et. al, 2006) (as cited in Medical News Today, 2006). In other words, the results of this study indicate that chemotherapy not only kills cancer cells but chemotherapy also kills healthy neural stem cells which are needed in order to enable normal neural functioning. So, in effect, the situation is that on the one hand the chemotherapy can kill the cancer but on the other hand the chemotherapy might also kill whats left of the patients healthy brain cells. If the patients brain cells die, that has bad consequences for the patients health. Also, traditional medical scientists and physicians are already aware that many patients on chemotherapy develop immune deficiency problems, they lose weight, they lose their hair, and they vomit and all of this does not make things better either.

Also, another reason that alternative medicine treatment is needed is because the traditional medicine drugs that are given for cancer do not always work. For example, it was stated that there are cancers that respond well to drugs for several years but then after awhile, the cancer patients cancer cells mutate and become resistant to the drugs (Reid, as cited in Landau, 2009). Obviously, if the drugs work for awhile but then the cancer cells mutate and become resistant to the drugs, that is problematic because if the drugs do not work, then the cancer spreads and can potentially kill the patient. Also, breast cancer, as a form of cancer, is one of those cancers that can come back, even after ten years (Reid, as cited in Landau, 2009) and so there is a necessity to find a treatment which is likely to work permanently

Alternative Treatments Applicable to Breast Cancer

Cayce Treatment For Cancer: Summarized

Edgar Cayce, considered the father of holistic medicine, long ago said that, in order to cure cancer, one has to decrease the amount of toxicity in the body and increase vitality in the body and he gave natural therapies "priority" in this effort (A.R.E., 2009). He did readings where he suggested measures that could treat cancer and he also did other readings where he suggested measures that generally improved the body's ability fight illness in general.

For instance, treatments he suggested include alternative treatments such as colonics to cleanse the colon, castor oil packs, exercise, chiropractic, alkaline diet, use of the wet cell appliance to introduce electricity into the body, ultraviolet light therapy, animated ash therapy, beef juice, consumption of three almonds daily as a preventative, bible reading of specific passages such as Deuteronomy 30, addressing the karmic aspects of illness, the ideals exercise, water consumption of at least eight glasses of water per day to remove toxins from the body and assist in healing, and sometimes surgery (A.R.E., 2009).

In the Cayce records, it was reported that in fact several cancer patients were cured using Cayces suggestions. For instance, the following cases were reportedly successfully cured of cancer using the Cayce treatment protocol:

Cayce reading 4901 male cancer of the lip

Cayce reading 2457 female cancer of the breast

Cayce reading 1967 male cancer of the ear

Cayce reading 1500 female sarcoma of the breast and legs

Cayce reading 757 female cancer of the skin

Cayce reading 570 male cancer of the abdomen

(Please note that reading 2457 listed above (reading 2457-4 who was a female who had breast cancer) obtained a reading from Cayce when she was 38 years old. In his reading for her, Cayce gave her specific instructions on how to cure her breast cancer. She followed Cayce's instructions exactly and she cured her breast cancer. She died 36 years later peacefully in her sleep at the age of 74).

Cayce Treatment for Cancer: Specifics Pertaining to Alkaline Diet, Castor Oil Packs, and Wet Cell

Cayce's suggested that there should be an alkaline diet and specific dietary suggestions that Cayce made included citrus fruit or cooked or dry cereal for breakfast, plain raw lettuce salad for lunch [with no salad dressing], and steamed vegetables and fish for dinner (A.R.E., 2009). Also he suggested avoidance of fried foods, excess flour foods, acid foods and other unhealthy foods (A.R.E., 2009).

Castor oil packs were suggested in cases of cancer but also suggested in various other illnesses as well. Also, in some cases, the castor oil packs are not only put over the abdomen and liver, but also the hot castor oil packs can be put over the breast or anywhere else on the body where a tumor or other type of illness problem exists (Abernathy, 2009).

Of note, there are many anecdotal reports of individuals healing from various illnesses as a result of using castor oil packs; however, there was also a formal study which was done to test the effectiveness of castor oil (as cited in Avian-Web LLC, 2009). The study was a double-blind study which examined the lymphocyte values of 36 healthy subjects both before and after topical castor oil application (as cited in Avian-Web LLC, 2009). This particular study was described by Harvey Grady in a report entitled "Immunomodulation Through Castor Oil Packs" and it was published in 1997 in the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine. Of note, in this particular study it was found that doing castor oil pack therapy of a minimal two-hour duration produced an increase in the number of T-11 cells within a 24-hour period following treatment with a simultaneous increase in the number of total lymphocytes (as cited in Avian-Web LLC, 2009). This study found that castor oil use had an impact on the lymphatic system and that castor oil actually improved immune system function (as cited in Avian-Web LLC, 2009). Another thing worth noting too is that castor oil packs have been anecdotally reported to dissolve tumors (Armand & Lorrie, 2009)---for example there are anecdotal reports that castor oil dissolved a renal clear cell carcinoma tumor on the kidney (Armand & Lorrie, 2009).

Also relevant in cancer treatment is the Cayce wet cell appliance on the spine and osteopathic or chiropractic adjustments to the spine. For example, in Cayce reading #1500-2, Cayce recommended that a 53 year old woman with breast cancer use the wet cell to improve her vibrations and he also recommended spinal manipulations for her to help cure the breast cancer (page 91, Todeschi, 2007). This woman did all of what Cayce suggested and she used the wet cell and got the spinal manipulations done and she was reportedly cured of her breast cancer (p. 91, Todeschi, 2007).

Possible Evidence to Support Cayce's Wet Cell Suggestion

I can imagine that some physicians might say that there is not enough research evidence to suggest that something such as the wet cell appliance (electricity) might work to help cure cancer. In response to that, I point out that in fact there is supportive research evidence in the sense that in research done by Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. Otto Van Warburg it was found that healthy cells in the human body have specific voltage levels of 70 millivolts or more whereas cancer cells have voltage as low as 15 to 20 millivolts (as cited in SEAD, 2009). Thus based on the findings of Dr. Van Warburg's research, it can be said that since good health and absence of cancer are associated with higher levels of voltage in the cells [70 millivolts to 90 millivolts] and since the presence of cancer is associated with lower levels of voltage in the cells [15 to 50 millivolts] (as cited in SEAD, 2009), it does appear that increasing the level of voltage in the cells possibly would be a critically important step to take if one's goal was to help the cells of the body become healthier and get rid of cancer. Therefore, using the Cayce wet cell to heal cancer would make a lot of sense because the wet cell adds voltage to the body and Dr. Otto Van Warburg's research indicated that the occurrence of cancer is definitely associated with insufficient levels of voltage in the cells of the body. Also there is evidence that using the wet cell works to cure cancer as evidenced by the patient's curing her cancer in Cayce reading #1500-2 and this is something that should be kept in mind too.

The biggest challenge would be figuring out how much voltage would enough for an individual patient and figuring out how strong to make the wet cell solution. In a general sense, pertaining to various illnesses, Cayce suggested average strength wet cell mixtures in some cases, he suggested medium strength wet cell mixtures in some cases, and he suggested double strength wet cell mixtures in other cases of illness. The strength of the wet cell solution that Cayce suggested seemed to vary from patient to patient based on the patient's individual needs. Granted, it makes sense that the strength of the wet cell mixture would vary from individual to individual because individuals differ in terms of the stage or severity of their cancer thus their individual needs for electricity in their cells would differ depending on the severity of their cancer. It would be the physician's challenge to figure out exactly what strength wet cell mixture would be appropriate for each individual patient based on the stage and severity of the cancer.

Implementation of the Wet Cell Treatments

In terms of implementing the wet cell treatments, typically the wet cell is used in specific ways described by Cayce (for example with the nickel plate placed on the umbilicus just up slightly and to the right of the navel) and copper plate placed on the back at the 9th dorsal for example or at other points along the back depending on the particular illness]; however the wet cell is also used in such a way that the helpful energies flow through the afflicted body part (Delany, 2008). There is the general Cayce suggestion to do the placement with the nickel plate on the umbilicus (just to the right and slightly up from the belly button) and then placement of the copper plate on the back at the 9th dorsal vertebrae; this is a placement Cayce recommended for several illnesses and that is why I mention it here. Cayce usually suggested 30 minute sessions. If cancer had spread to various areas in the body, the wet cell placement would have to be such that the electrical healing energies would flow through the specific area afflicted with the cancer in order to enable curing of the cancer [or at the very least it would likely slow down the growth of the cancer and this might extend the person's life]. Further research needs to be done on this.

Cayce Recommendation of Vibrator Treatment: Possibly Relevant for Cancer

Cayce often suggested the use of an electric hand vibrator (McMillin, 1991). The vibrator was not suggested specifically for breast cancer; however, Cayce did suggest use of the vibrator in other cases of illnesses and that is why it is listed here as possibly relevant for cancer patients in some cases, perhaps not necessarily all cases. In cases where vibrator use was recommended, Cayce said that vibrator should be placed along either side of the spine while the treatments should be done at bedtime for 15 to 20 minutes and treatment should be done until the body is relaxed (see McMillin, 1991 for more information).

Sound Therapy for Cancer Tumors

Another treatment that could be helpful in breast cancer treatment is sound therapy. For example, Fabien Maman, a French bioenergeticist, studied the effects of sound on cells in the body while working with breast cancer patients. Interestingly, Maman found that when sound was used, one breast cancer patient's tumor completely disappeared and another breast cancer patient's tumor "dried up" (as cited in Jordan-Reilly, 2009). Based on his observation that his patients' tumors were disappearing after using sound therapy, Maman concluded that cancer cells could be destroyed by sound therapy (as cited in Jordan-Reilly, 2009).

Also in support of sound therapy as a general cancer treatment, there is work done by British physicians and Chinese physicians. For instance, in London, physicians at Royal Marsden Hospital found that high density ultrasound was an effective means of doing "knifeless surgery" on liver cancer and other organ tumors (as cited in Jordan-Reilly, 2009). Also there was a medical trial at University College Hospital and at the private Princess Grace hospital in London where men with prostate cancer were treated using HIFU/ultrasound (as cited at MedIndia.net, 2009). The researchers in this study used this ultrasound therapy [HIFU] to treat 172 men and out of this group, 78 percent of the men were released from the hospital within an average of 5 hours after treatment (as cited at MedIndia.net, 2009). Out of this group of 172 men, the researchers reportedly did follow up on 159 of the men one year later and they found that 92 percent of the men were cancer-free one year after the treatment (as cited at MedIndia.net, 2009). Also the researchers in this study found that HIFU/ultrasound therapy resulted in fewer side effects than the side effects that occur when people are treated with radiotherapy or surgery (as cited at MedIndia.net, 2009).

In China, patients with liver and pancreas cancer have had treatments where high density ultrasound or sound therapy was used to "cook" or raise the temperature of their tumors and this process destroyed the tumors (as cited in Jordan-Reilly, 2009). True, this was not breast cancer, however, it is possible that this type of approach could eventually work for breast cancer. Cooking tumors (as a cancer treatment) has been done in the United States as well (Mackenzie, 2009). It has not been done for breast cancer; however it has been done with success for brain cancer (Mackenzie, 2009). For example, at the Cleveland Clinic, the physicians reportedly used a laser to put heat (160 degrees Fahrenheit) into a cancer patient's brain (Mackenzie, 2009). The next day, images were taken of the patient's brain and there was no cancer there at all; the heat apparently got rid of the cancer (Mackenzie, 2009). So far, this treatment has only been tested on a few patients in the United States (Mackenzie, 2009); however, results have been successful in all cases thus far (Mackenzie, 2009). Hopefully, if this treatment continues to be successful, this form of treatment will be eventually used in cases of breast cancer in the United States.

Oxygen Therapy for Cancer

Another thing too that would be important in curing cancer would be to get sufficient oxygen into the cells. For example, Dr. Otto Van Warburg, in his research, reportedly found that normal cells will become cancerous if the oxygen level in the environment was lowered by 35% for 48 hours (as cited in SEAD, 2009). And so getting oxygen into the cells would be important in healing from cancer. Perhaps oxygen supplements or oxygen drops would be one way to do this. Or perhaps exercise would be an optimal way to do this since Cayce emphasized the importance of exercise in healing.

Integrative Oncology for Cancer

Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, who is currently a clinical professor of medicine at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University (Gaynor Integrative Oncology, 2009), has become a leader in the movement toward integrative oncologycombining traditional Western medicine (chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow transplants) with Eastern techniques such as meditation and yoga, lifestyle changes, nutrition programs, and dietary supplements (as cited in Armstrong, 2009) (Gaynor Integrative Oncology, 2009).

Gaynor began using eastern spiritual practices when he treated a Tibetan monk who educated him about chanting and metal singing bowls (as cited in Armstrong, 2009). At the time he started prescribing Eastern approaches, he already knew a lot about nutrition as it pertains to cancer treatment (as cited in Armstrong, 2009). Also, he had been doing guided imagery with patients (as cited in Armstrong, 2009). But then he decided to become more involved in integrative oncology and he became interested in teaching many people about holistic medicine (as cited in Armstrong, 2009) (see also Rosenbloom, 2005).

Curing Leaky Gut Syndrome as a Treatment for Cancer

Another issue that could be relevant to healing breast cancer is to address leaky gut syndrome. In other words, specifically it would be necessary to make certain that the patient did not have leaky gut syndrome (or any other ulcer-like conditions in the body) which was making the body more toxic and contributing to the conditions which were enabling the cancer to grow. Leaky gut syndrome is an issue that Cayce did discuss pertaining to various illnesses, not specifically just cancer (see Pagano, 2008).

What exactly is leaky gut syndrome? Leaky gut syndrome occurs when there is a thinning of the intestinal lining or when there are literally holes in the colon (i.e. colon ulceration ). Why does leaky gut syndrome happen? Leaky gut syndrome occurs due to a lifetime of consuming overly acidic foods OR leaky gut syndrome may occur for other reasons such as the following: alcohol and caffeine overconsumption (the alcohol and caffeine reportedly irritates the colon walls), candida and colon dysbiosis caused by antibiotic use, use of drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antacids, aspirin, ibuprofen, environmental toxins, use of some food additives, insufficiency of the digestive enzymes, the presence of liver problems, the presence of excessive stress in the patient's life (because the presence of stress reduces the flow of blood to the colon which renders the colon unable to repair itself quickly enough), gastrointestinal disease, and/or a diet that is overly high in refined carbohydrates (The Environmental Illness Resources, 2010). Of note, it has been reported by others that medication such as Accutane could be another potential reason that colon ulceration problems occur (for more information about that, see the references section and note the website that describes that a lawsuit is being filed by attorney Jonathan Fontenot on behalf of clients who developed ulcerative colitis reportedly as a result of taking Accutane) .

The result of leaky gut syndrome is that, when there is thinning of the intestinal walls, these toxins do not go through the excretory system in the usual way. Instead, the toxins leak through the colon walls and into the bloodstream where the toxins basically end up floating around the body in the superficial circulation and lymphatics (Mein, 1989). This quickly creates very toxic conditions inside the body (Pagano, 2008). If one were thinking of this from a chemist's perspective, it is akin to the chemical conditions inside the body completely changing as a result of toxins leaking through the colon walls and floating into the bloodstream.

From that point, the cells in the body react to the extremely toxic conditions inside the body and needless to say, the results can be very bad for a person's health. In fact, it has been stated in the literature that having a toxic situation in the body resulting from leaky gut syndrome could potentially be a major factor in many illnesses such as psoriasis, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraine headaches, celiac disease, diabetes, lupus, and many other diseases including cancer in some cases (Pagano, 2008). If one is interested in finding out if one has leaky gut syndrome, one could order or ask one's doctor to order an "intestinal permeability test" such as [for example] the Genova Intestinal Permeability Assessment (Crohns.net, 2010) which helps identify weakness in the colon lining.

Fortunately, Cayce did give a suggestion for healing leaky gut syndrome. Cayce said that drinking "American saffron tea" and "slippery elm tea" and doing hydrotherapy (colonics) was an effective means of healing leaky gut syndrome (A.R.E., 2009) (see also Pagano, 2008). Also it is possible that there needs to be research done to determine whether the wet cell can be used for a few minutes a day to repair the lining of the colon quickly. The reason I say this is because the wet cell does tend to heal the body and it was often suggested for non-colon related issues in illness in the Cayce readings (A.R.E., 2008). Thus, because the wet cell was helpful in other cases of illness, the notion of using the wet cell/ electricity to repair the colon is not so far fetched.

Of course, one potential challenge is that the doctor and patient must figure out exactly where in the colon that the leaky gut syndrome is taking place. To some extent, the patient can identify where he or she is feeling pain when he or she eats food or consumes drinks. But in some cases, it could be more complicated than that. It is important to identify where the thinning of the colon wall is so that one can figure out exactly where to place the wet cell pieces (the nickel piece and copper piece) so that the healing electrical energies flow through the part of the colon where the leaky gut problem is occurring.

The Reghr Clark Treatment For Cancer and Electrical Device

Dr. Hulda Regehr Clark wrote "The Cure for All Cancers" (Regehr Clark, 1993) and "The Cure for All Advanced Cancers" (Regehr Clark, 1999). In her books, she described how she did research on patients and she reported a high cure rate (Reghr Clark, 1993). Also, there are anecdotal reports of her cancer treatment having successfully healed cancer in some patients (see Doerksen, 2008).

Dr. Clark described that cancer could be cured by using a combination of dried and fresh leaves of Wormwood, tincture from the green hulls of black walnut trees, freshly ground cloves, and an electrical device she designed that she called a "zapper" (Regehr Clark, 1993). She explained that the presence of cancer coincided with the presence of an intestinal parasites ("flukes"), residue from solvents in the body, and excessive toxins in the body (Regehr Clark, 1993). She stated that the presence of all of these things in the body created toxic conditions in the body which made the body vulnerable to cancer occurring in the body (Regehr Clark, 1993). Thus, she felt it was essential to detoxify the body, use herbs, and use the electrical zapper to restore normal healthy conditions to the body in order to cure the cancer (Regehr Clark, 1993).

Some disagreed with Dr. Reghr Clark's treatment methods; however, of note, her use of electricity is not so far fetched. For example, using electricity in healing makes sense, given Dr. Otto Van Warburg's statements about how the lack of voltage in cells corresponds to illness. Also, her use of herbs is consistent with the fact that various kinds of herbs have, in some cases, been found to cure cancer.

Orthomolecular Oncology

Began by Dr. Abram Hoffer, orthomolecular oncology started as a result of Dr. Hoffer's success in giving vitamins to his patients with schizophrenia (as cited by SurviveCancer, 2009). When Dr. Hoffer gave large doses of vitamins and minerals for his cancer patients, the terminal cancer patients reportedly survived four times longer than they were expected to survive while a small percentage of the cancer patients were reportedly cured of cancer (as cited by SurviveCancer, 2009).

In more recent research, in 2008 it was found that higher doses of vitamin D cut individuals' risk of dying of cancer in half (as cited by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, 2008). Another study showed that consuming 2000 IU of vitamin D cuts risk of dying of breast cancer in half (as cited by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, 2008).

Vitamin D is just one example. Vitamin C and vitamin E have also been cited as being effective in cancer treatment (Hoffer, 2000). Vitamins such as beta carotene, selenium, calcium, and folic acid have been reported to be relevant in fighting or preventing cancer (The Cancer Cure Foundation, 2010). However, research is ongoing. If you are interested in reading more about orthomolecular treatment of cancer, there are relevant books about the topic. For example, there is a book by Dr. Michael Gonzalez, Dr. Jorge Miranda-Massuri, and Dr. Andrew Saul titled "I Have Cancer, What Should I Do? Your Orthomolecular Guide for Cancer Management."

Fibrovan to Address Estrogen Dominance: Possibly Relevant for Breast Cancer

Fibrovan is a product designed to address uterine fibroids (Fibrovan, 2008). The reader should note that as far as I know, there have not been formal medical studies which test the effectiveness of Fibrovan. However, there are anecdotal reports that the product does effectively reduce fibroid tumors (Fibrovan, 2008). This could be relevant for breast cancer in the sense that if the breast cancer patient is suffering from estrogen dominance and if the patient also happens to have fibroids in addition to having breast cancer, anecdotal evidence suggests that Fibrovan could be helpful in removing the fibroids at least. If the fibroids are removed, that could somewhat reduce the amount of excess estrogen in the body. Less estrogen in the body means stronger likelihood of overcoming breast cancer (because estrogen excess is a major factor in breast cancer). There needs to be more medical research on this product. However, if the anecdotal reports are true, this could be a helpful thing in some cases. At the least, more medical research needs to be done on this.

Acupuncture and Breast Cancer

Acupuncture has been given to breast cancer patients as a treatment that reduces pain and nausea (as cited in BreastCancer.org, 2008). In fact, studies have shown that can relieve nausea and does relieve cancer-related pain that cancer patients experience (as cited in BreastCancer.org, 2008). It was suggested that if one is interested in getting acupuncture, it is important to make sure the medical practitioner has experience in doing acupuncture on breast cancer patients (BreastCancer.org, 2008).

Getting Sufficient Sleep: Relevance to Cancer Treatment

Psychiatrists at Stanford University, Dr. David Spiegel and Dr. Sandra Sephton, have stated that sleep difficulties change the balance of two hormones that impact cancer cells (Kirchheimer, 2003). One of the hormones, cortisol, is active in impacting immune system functioning (Kirchheimer, 2003). If one does not sleep normal hours or if one wakes up often at night and if one's cortisol rhythm "shifts, ", that could result in earlier death from breast cancer (Kirchheimer, 2003). The other hormone, melatonin, reduces the amount of estrogen produced in the ovaries (Kirchheimer, 2003). So, if there is insufficient amount of sleep which results in insufficient production of melatonin, it means that there will not be enough melatonin to reduce the amount of estrogen in the ovaries (Kirchheimer, 2003). If there is not enough melatonin to reduce the amount of estrogen in the ovaries, it means that it is more likely that the body will have excessive amounts of estrogen (Kirchheimer, 2003). Excessive amounts of estrogen means it's more likely cancer will develop (Kirchheimer, 2003). Also, in related research, researchers found that tumors actually grew faster in mice who slept poorly because their circadian rhythms were interfered with (as cited in Science Daily, 2003). Also, in a study done in 2008, researchers found that people who slept fewer than seven hours per night had 47 percent higher risk of cancer than those who got more sleep (Dunham, 2008). Thus, for health reasons, it is important to get sufficient sleep every night and is important to sleep normal hours.

Phytoestrogen Removal from Diet: Relevance to Cancer Treatment

Phytoestrogens are chemicals in plants; these chemicals can mimic estrogen in the body (Warren & Devine, 2001). Examples of phytoestrogens are isoflavonoids (soybeans and soy products, lignans (which are in bran cereal, beans or flaxseeds), and coumestan (such as peas, lima beans, pinto beans, alfalfa, and clovers) (Warren & Devine, 2001).

Admittedly, there has been some confusion in the research. For instance, an animal study indicated that soy phytoestrogens can decrease breast cancer in rats; however, on the other hand, both human studies and animal studies have indicated that soy phytoestrogen can behave like estrogen and potentially increase the risk of having breast cancer (Warren & Devine, 2001). Because of the studies that indicate that soy phytoestrogen can potentially behave like estrogen and increase risk of breast cancer, some researchers have recommended that women should not eat a large amount of soy products or soy supplements because of potential harmful effects of soy phytoestrogens (Warren & Devine, 2001). More studies need to be done to clarify this issue; however, I noted phytoestrogens in this discussion because others have stated that it is a factor in breast cancer.

Karma and Its Relevance to Cancer

Karma within a reincarnational context is a concept that was described by Cayce as being relevant in cancer and other illnesses. However, Cayce is not the only person who discussed karma and reincarnation. In fact, historically some cultures and world religions believed in the concept of karma and reincarnation. Buddhists and others believed in (and still believe in) reincarnation and karma. Ancient Greeks believed in reincarnation. For example, a Greek thinker named Pherecydes of Syros was reportedly interested in reincarnation (Schibli & Hermann, 2001). Plato also reportedly learned reincarnation as a concept (Walker, 1904). He said that all learning is but recollection because we have innate knowledge of universal ideas and we need only recall our buried memories. Early Christian sects like the Sethians and the Gnostic Christians (specifically members of the Gnostic Church of Valentinus) reportedly believed in reincarnation (Slater, 2006).

In academic circles, in the field of psychology, individuals such as William James and Carl Jung have addressed the topic of karma. Also, Dr. Ian Stevenson, a psychiatrist, published case studies of children who reportedly recalled their past lifetimes (Stevenson, 1966) (Stevenson, 2008) (see also Shroder, 2007). Dr. Jim Tucker, a child psychiatrist, has also done work with children who reportedly remembered their past lifetimes and he offers an explanation of how quantum physics allows for the existence of reincarnation (Tucker, 2005). Tucker (2005) argued that consciousness may not be solely a function of the physical brain but rather he feels that consciousness could be a separate entity that impinges on the physical. In describing how this could work, he described the example of a television where there is a signal and the television is needed in order to decode a signal, however, he emphasized that the television does not originate or create the signal (Tucker, 2005).

Pertaining specifically to cancer, there was a reading where Cayce said There are physical disturbances that are a part of the entity's karma. They are for lessons for those responsible for the body, if ye will accept it" (excerpt from Cayce reading #3391-1). What Cayce's statement suggests is that not only is the patient experiencing the cancer due to the patient's own karmic reasons but there are also lessons involved for those who are caretakers or who are responsible for the patient. In other words, whoever is responsible for taking care of the patient has lessons. In some cases if the sick person is a child, then the parents would have lessons because presumably the parents are the caretakers of the child. If the sick person is an adult, then the spouse or whoever else is taking care of the patient would have lessons as a result of taking care of the patient.

Why is the Idea of Reincarnation a Plausible Idea?

It is true that one cannot necessarily prove the existence of a past lifetime. One cannot necessarily prove the existence of reincarnation. However, in my opinion, one reason that the reader should keep an open mind is because scientists have said that in fact there are things in the physical world that are known to exist but which human senses are incapable of sensing. One example of this is the example of the visible spectrum. For example, scientists have said that human beings are not able tosee the whole electromagnetic spectrum due to the limits of human vision. Yet scientists have also said that there are animals such as birds, for example, that can see frequencies which are outside of the part of the spectrum that is visible to humans. Obviously it would be inaccurate to say that the parts of the spectrum that humans cannot see do not exist because in fact birds see parts of the spectrum that humans cannot see and obviously the parts of the spectrum that birds can see do exist because scientists have said that it exists.

Dog whistles are another example of this type of thing. For example, human ears cannot hear dog whistles but yet dog whistles obviously do make a sound because dogs can hear dog whistles. Thus, it would be inaccurate to say that dog whistles make no sound just because human ears cannot hear the dog whistles sound. Human ears cannot hear the sound of a dog whistle but the sound is nonetheless very real to dogs because dogs have sufficient physiology and sufficient hearing abilities such that they are able to hear a dog whistle even though humans cannot hear a dog whistleat all.

Yet another example of this type of thing is the phenomena of solid objects being comprised of fast moving atoms. It is well known that when humans look at a solid object such as a table, the table appears to be solid when looked at by the human eye. However, physicists insist that, although the table appears to be solid, in fact the table is comprised of rapidly moving atoms. So, you see, even though the table appears to besolid, physicists tell us that the reality of the situation is that the table is actually comprised of fast moving atoms that are moving so fast that it cannot be detected by the human eye.

Human beings cannot see all parts of the visual spectrum but yet the other parts of the visual spectrum are real and are able to be seen by birds. Human beings cannot hear dog whistles but yet dogs can hear dog whistles so the sound that dog whistles make is real. Human beings, usinghuman eyes, cannot see the fast moving atoms in solid objects but yet physicists say that the fast moving atoms are very real. Because of these examples, in an analogous sense, I think that it is at least within the realm of possibility that possiblyreincarnation and karma are very real but maybe human senses are incapable of sensing reincarnation or sensing past lifetimes due to limitations in the brain orhuman sensory apparatus that usually limits what humans can perceive. Granted, apparently not all humans are limited in what they can perceive. For example, the children who were interviewed inresearch done by Dr. Ian Stevenson and in research done by Dr. Jim Tucker were reportedly able to sense their past lives (Stevenson, 1966) (Stevenson, 2008) (Tucker, 2005). Also, television news reporter Chris Cuomo reported the story of an American child named James Leininger who reportedly was able to rememberhispast life as a World War II US military pilot who was killed in 1945 (see the book Soul Survivor: The Reincarnation of a World War II Fighter Pilot by Andrea Leininger, et. al, 2009) (see also Miligan, 2004) (see also ABC News Primetime, 2005). Also, for more information, read the book Childrens Past Lives: How Past Life Memories Affect Your Child by Carol Bowman. There are also other famous examples where individuals reportedly remembered past lives.

As you read, please keep in mind that although scientists know a lot about the human brain, there are still things that are not yet known about the human brain. It is an ongoing scientific discovery process. For example, some people who have autism have nonetheless shown the ability to do complex math calculations. Others have shown the ability to do other remarkable things with the brain. Obviously not everyone exhibits these kinds of mental abilities but some people are capable of it. Why did I mention this? Because, although medical science does not fully understand how some individuals brain capacity enables them to do unusual things, the fact that it does happen suggests that it is possible that the human brain has the ability to do spectacular things if used fully. And in fact, I am thinking that it is at least possible or plausible that if the human brains full capacities were used, there could be more recollection of past lives on a wider scale. If that occurred, it would be evidence that past lives and reincarnation and karma may be a reality. The widespread realization and acknowledgement of past lives, reincarnation, and karma would completely revolutionize psychology and medicine and life as we know it. Also, I think there is much that physicists have yet to discover about the nature of reality and the true nature of time. Perhaps there are answers yet to be discovered which will fully explain the true nature of time and which will fully explain the capacities of the human brain and perhaps at that time it will be better understood how the brain can perceive past life information.

In Addition to Alternative Medicine Treatments: Environmental Toxins

In addition to the above mentioned alternative measures, something that the reader should keep in mind is that if a patient is exposed to environmental toxins in the workplace or elsewhere, then obviously in addition to the above mentioned alternative treatments, it would be helpful to immediately remove the patient from a setting where he or she is being exposed to environmental toxins. The importance of avoiding environmental toxins is underscored by the unfortunate example of many people who had past exposure to asbestos in the workplace and who many years later were diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer as a result of being exposed to asbestos in the workplace (Asbestos.com, 2010). The asbestos-mesothelioma example is just one example of how environmental toxins can cause cancer (Asbestos.com, 2010). There are other examples too.

For example, if a person works as a mechanic where they are breathing car exhaust fumes on a daily basis, if the person works at a pharmaceutical company or chemical company where they smell the smell of chemicals as they walk into the work building or as they work at the building during the day, or if a person is a runner who happens to run in a part of town where the smell of toxic fumes fills the air often, even if the exposure to the chemicals or toxins was minimal, if a person breathed enough of it on a regular basis it could still cause damage to the human body. Environmental toxins do cause estrogen dominance in the body (Hoffman, 2010) which would put one at risk of eventually developing breast cancer (Hoffman, 2010).

But What About Genetic Causes of Cancer and the Applicability of Alternative Medicine?

After reading the information that has been presented, the reader might be concerned that perhaps the Cayce suggestions for cancer and other alternative medicine methods of cancer treatment do not adequately address the genetic aspects of cancer. Or the reader may be wondering if alternative medicine treatments can potentially alter gene expression, given that cancer has a strong genetic component. In response to that concern, I say that it is likely that the Cayce suggestions and other alternative medicine suggestions most likely do address the genetic aspects of cancer. Why do I say that? Because, due to the nature of what alternative medicine methods are, if a patient implementsalternative medicine methods, it definitely will change the environment inside of the patients body in ways that can potentially alter gene expression.

For example, let us consider one alternative medicine approach that was discussed in a previous section of this writing the orthomolecular approach. As previously noted, the basis of orthomolecular treatment is that patients are given vitamins to help treat their illnesses because, in alternative medicine circles, it has long been asserted that vitamin deficiency is a major reason why illness occurs. Is there any proof that using vitamins to treat illness can alter gene expression OR is there proof that using perhaps a diet that is rich in specific vitamins and nutrients can alter gene expression? Well, yes, there is proof because interestingly, in 2003, there was a study that was done at a major university which not only proved that a diet rich with specific vitamins can influence health but also the study demonstrated that a diet rich with specific vitamins can actually alter gene expression pertaining to health. The 2003 study, done by oncologist Dr. Randy Jirtle and Dr. Robert Waterland, involved mice who had the agouti gene. Of note, the agouti gene causes mice to have yellow coats and causes the mice to have a tendency towards obesity and diabetes if the gene is expressed continuously. Thus, the agouti gene is an example of a gene which is known to cause health problems i.e. it causes obesity and diabetes.

In the study done by Jirtle and Waterland (2003), a group of pregnant mice with the agouti gene were given a diet rich in vitamin B12 and folic acid. However, to another group of pregnant mice who had the agouti gene, prenatal vitamins were not given. The result of the experiment was that giving pregnant mice the diet rich with vitamin B12 and folic acid actually altered the expression of the agouti gene and resulted in the pregnant mice giving birth to healthy normal mice that had no diabetes tendencies. Please note that the genomic structure of the DNA was not altered as a result of the pregnant mice being given the diet rich with vitamin B12 and folic acid. However, the diet rich with vitamin B12 and folic acid did alter the expression of the agouti gene and this was sufficient to result in healthy mice being born despite the presence of the agouti gene.

Keep in mind that research on vitamin treatments for cancer has shown that 1) higher doses of vitamin D cut individuals' risk of dying of cancer in half (as cited by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, 2008), 2) consuming 2000 IU of vitamin D cuts risk of dying of breast cancer in half (as cited by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, 2008), and 3) vitamin C, vitamin E (Hoffer, 2000), beta carotene, selenium, calcium and folic acid have all been shown in research to be relevant in fighting or preventing cancer (The Cancer Cure Foundation, 2010). Vitamins have also been shown to be effective in fighting other kinds of illnesses as well. Keep in mind also that healthy diet has been found in research to be important in treating cancer and other illnesses.

Implementing healthy diet and giving the patient vitamins are both alternative medicine methods. Cayce often discussed the importance of healthy alkaline diet in healing illness and people such as Abram Hoffer and also orthomolecular oncologists implemented orthomolecular treatments wherepatientswere given vitamins to help cure their illnesses. As far as I am aware, alternative medicine research did not focus on specific genes that cause illness;illness was acknowledged as occuring due to genetic reasonsbut there wasn't as much focus on specific genes in the same way that traditional medicine physicians focus on specific genes today. However, due to the research findings in the study done by Jirtle and Waterman (2003), we nowhave more clarity and we havemore insight intowhy using diet and vitamins to heal illness is actually relevant to the genetic component of illness. For instance, based on the results of the Jirtle and Waterman (2003) study, we now know that healthy diet rich with specific vitamins works because italters the expression of genes that cause illness; we know this because in the Jirtle and Waterman (2003) study, their feeding pregnant mice a vitamin and nutrient rich diet resulted in them being able to alter the expression of the agouti gene and the mice were able to give birth to healthy offspring despite the presence of the agouti gene.To reiterate, issues that are typically discussed in alternative medicine such as diet and vitamins do in fact impact genes that cause illness and can alter gene expression.

Final Comments

The foregoing has been a discussion of various alternative medicine methods which have been shown to cure cancer. I think that these alternative medicine therapies should be moreso explored in medical attempts to cure cancer. I do not think information should be ignored. For example, just to give one example of how traditional medicine is ignoring relevant information, despite the existing information on leaky gut syndrome, and despite Dr. Van Warburg's research findings about the importance of having sufficient voltage in cells so that cells are not vulnerable to cancer, and despite Cayce's suggestion of using the wet cell in breast cancer treatment, and despite the fact that the Cayce wet cell and chiropractic resulted in a person curing her breast cancer, traditional medicine physicians and traditional medical researchers are not integrating these things into their thinking pertaining to cancer. Also clearing patients colon via use of colonics the way Cayce described, doing castor oil packs over the abdomen and liver daily, and creating alkaline conditions in the body are also things that some traditional physicians seem not to be paying much attention to when they design their medical studies pertaining to cancer treatment. Or, if there are any research teams are addressing this, as of yet, we aren't hearing much about it publically. And very obviously, colonics and treatment of leaky gut syndrome and Cayce castor oil packs over the abdomen and liver combined with electrical treatment of cells is not standard procedure in typical cancer treatments in most major hospitals in the United States as of the time of this writing (in 2010). Especiallypertaining to colonics, I am very surprised that colonics have yet to be established on a widespread basis as standard procedure in cancer treatment particularly sinceover a hundredyears agoit was actually scientifically acknowledged thatthe presence of colon toxins can damage one's health. For example, in 1908, scientist Elie Metchnikoff was awarded the Nobel Prize for research done pertaining to immunity in the human body;Metchnikoffs research found that the presence of colon toxins literally shortens the lifespan and also this research found that illness happens as a result of toxins building up in the body. So, it seems logical that this sort of information should be taken into consideration when it comes to discussing efforts to improve human health and efforts to cure cancer.

Of course, one thing that others havementioned in the literature as being an obstacle for curing cancer is theidea that cancer is big business and if people were cured of cancer, then certain sectors would no longer make as much profit;for example, in the book "Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic, " there is discussion of how breast cancer has been framed to benefit the practice of medicine and not necessarily benefit women (Kasper & Ferguson, 2000). There is emphasis on the fact that there is a breast cancer marketplace where women are sought after "consumers" and not patients (Kasper & Ferguson, 2000). In other words, the emphasis ismore about business and profit and there is not enough emphasis on curing the cancer patient.

I think that there needs to be less emphasis on profit and more emphasis on the cancer patients. I think that traditional medicine needs to take alternative medicine treatments for cancer more seriously. Of note, there are places such as "Cancer Centers of America" that do incorporate some alternative medicine approaches and there have been patients who survived breast cancer after being treated there (Cancer Centers of America, 2010). Also, there are holistic medical doctors (M.D.'s) who specialize in using alternative medicine methods. However, I think that use of alternative medicine methods in cancer treatment needs to be even more widespread than this. Alternative medicine methods needs to be given top priority in medicine at this time when it comes to cancer treatment.

From Critical Science to Solutions: The Best of Scientific Solutions (Work, Health, and Environment Series)
From Critical Science to Solutions: The Best of Scientific Solutions (Work, Health, and Environment Series) This book is a selection of New Solutions articles, published over the past two decades, from the Scientific Solutions section of the journal. The section is intended as a forum for the presentation of scientific results or summaries of scientific data that call for strong action to protect public health, even in the absence of definitive proof of cause and effect. In this volume, the articles are grouped into three sections: critical science, precautionary science, and solutions science. In the first section, the contributors challenge current ways in which science is practiced or interpreted and call for new ways of thinking about environmental and occupational risks. In the second section, the contributors offer new ways of understanding scientific data that will lead to more protective policies or regulations. The third section broadens the framework for future actions to ensure public health. The final essay proposes a way forward, from thinking mainly about problems to thinking mainly about solutions. The three sections constitute a logical progression from scientific knowledge to fashioning bold solutions to problems in environmental and occupational health. Readers are introduced to some of the most important issues in the field, described by leading progressive thinkers and proponents of solutions. This collection can be used as a reader in courses, and by worker health and safety and environmental health advocates in the United States and other countries. Intended Audience: College or graduate students in science and public health; worker health and safety advocates; policymakers; environmental health advocates.

Textbook of Pleural Diseases (Hodder Arnold Publication)
Textbook of Pleural Diseases (Hodder Arnold Publication) This is an internationally respected and authoritative work, providing in-depth coverage of all aspects of pleural disease. Building on the strengths of the well-received first edition, the book includes a thorough basic science section, aiding understanding of the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie diseases of the pleura. This is followed by a series of chapters discussing clinical aspects of the common (and less common) pleural diseases. Chapters in the clinical section--with authors from 10 countries--are written in an accessible and uniform style, making extensive use of illustrative material and covering definition, incidence and epidemiology, etiology and pathogenesis, clinical presentation, investigations, treatments, possible complications and directions for future developmetn. Chapters present 'state-of-the-art' scientific knowledge, but are written with sufficient clarity as to be understood by clinicians with only a limited science background. All published managment guidelines are included, each chapter concludes with a summary of the 'key points,' highlighting practical messages regarding patient management for the reader, and a comprehensive reference list is provided. In a final chapter, the editors endeavour to rpedict how the area of pleural disease may develop in forthcoming decades.

The book is an indispensable reference for pulmonologists with an interest in pleural disease, and is a useful reference for other pulmonary physicians and trainees in respiratory medicine.

Asbestos, Asbestosis, and Mesothelioma Toolkit - Comprehensive Medical Encyclopedia with Treatment Options, Clinical Data, and Practical Information (Two CD-ROM Set)
Asbestos, Asbestosis, and Mesothelioma Toolkit - Comprehensive Medical Encyclopedia with Treatment Options, Clinical Data, and Practical Information (Two CD-ROM Set) This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of asbestos, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals with long, thin fibers. It was once used widely as insulation. It also occurs in the environment. Asbestos fibers are so small you can't see them. Disturbing asbestos can cause fibers to float in the air. When this happens, they are easy to inhale. You breathe out most fibers, but some become lodged in the lungs. Over time, they can build up in the lungs, causing scarring and inflammation. This can eventually affect breathing and lead to disease, such as asbestosis, or scarring of the lungs that makes it hard to breathe, mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs or abdomen; and lung cancer. Lung diseases associated with asbestos usually develop over many years. Smoking cigarettes increases the risk. There is coverage of all three conditions in this collection. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value! The Encyclopedia presents a collection of official documents about a wide range of medical topics, diseases, illnesses, health and wellness. There is vital information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Cancer Institute, and more. End of Life Care in Respiratory Disease: From advanced disease to bereavement (Oxford Specialist Handbooks)
End of Life Care in Respiratory Disease: From advanced disease to bereavement (Oxford Specialist Handbooks) Respiratory disease is the second most common cause of death worldwide. Patients with advanced non-malignant disease, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, have similar or even greater health care needs than those with advanced lung cancer. Uncontrolled symptoms, distress, and social isolation contribute to the poor quality of life experienced by such patients.

This book provides practical guidance to professionals who care for patients with advanced respiratory disease. It gives evidence-based advice on a wide range of topics, including management of respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms, chronic respiratory failure, and respiratory emergencies. Recognition of when a patient may be approaching the end of life can be particularly challenging in patients with advanced respiratory disease. Ways to facilitate prognostication are covered, along with the significant communication and ethical challenges that this phase of life can present.

Written by a respiratory specialist and two palliative medicine physicians, this book will be of great value to doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals working in respiratory medicine and in palliative care, both in relation to everyday clinical practice as well as meeting the requirements for postgraduate exams.

The Virus and the Vaccine: Contaminated Vaccine, Deadly Cancers, and Government Neglect
The Virus and the Vaccine: Contaminated Vaccine, Deadly Cancers, and Government Neglect
Jonas Salk's polio vaccine is regarded as a veritbale medical miracle, for it largely eradicated one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century. But the story of the vaccine has a dark side, one that has never been fully told before. Between 1954 and 1963, close to 98 million Americans received polio vaccinations contaminated with a carcinogenic monkey virus, now known as SV40. The government downplayed the incident, and it was generally accepted that although oncogenic to lab animals, SV40 was harmless to humans. But now SV40 is showing up in human cancers, and prominent researchers are demanding a serious public health response to this forgotten polio vaccine contaminant. A gripping medical detective story, The Virus and the Vaccine raises major questions about vaccine policy.

Our Global Environment: A Health Perspective
Our Global Environment: A Health Perspective The crucial interdependence between humans and their environment is explored and illuminated in this revealing overview of the major environmental issues facing society in the twenty-first century. With attention to detail and cogent language, the author describes how human health and well-being are inextricably bound up in the web of interrelationships that characterize life on this planet. The presentation combines an overall ecological concern with specific elements related to personal and community health, giving readers a clear sense of how today's environmental issues directly impact their own lives.

New to the seventh edition is a chapter on clean energy alternatives that evaluates the long-term potential of the most promising renewable energy technologies as well as short-term strategies to increase energy efficiency. The discussion of global climate change has been significantly updated to reflect the latest assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change with regard to evidence of global warming, mitigation strategies, and adaptation measures, as well as an up-to-date summary of ongoing international efforts to negotiate binding treaties that would produce meaningful reductions in greenhouse gases.

Our Global Environment is widely praised by students and faculty for its clear, compelling presentation. Abundant photographs and illustrations highlight salient issues and clarify trends, while boxed inserts in every chapter contain timely examples of general concepts presented in the chapters.

DNA Methylation, Epigenetics and Metastasis (Cancer Metastasis - Biology and Treatment)
DNA Methylation, Epigenetics and Metastasis (Cancer Metastasis - Biology and Treatment) This book provides a broad and rich outline of the epigenetic mechanisms involved in cancer progression and the generation of metastasis. It describes the tumor suppressor genes undergoing transcriptional silencing by CpG island promoter hypermethylation in the different tumor types of the human anatomy and their association with tumoral behaviour. It also provides a comprehensive insightful look at the molecular players involved in DNA methylation, histone modification and chromatin remodelling complexes causing epigenetic lesions linked to the metastasic phenotypes. Finally, it explains how epigenetic lesions associated with cancer spreading can be targeted using new and potent chemotherapy drugs. The book is a state-of-the-art reference to all scientific researchers and clinicians interested in the understanding of the biological processes leading to tumor dissemination and to those that are keen to translate this knowledge to a better management of cancer patients. Each contributor is a specialist in their epigenetic area and their joint effort has created a unique view of the DNA methylation, histone and chromatin changes that define cancer metastasis.

Cytopathology (Fundamentals of Biomedical Science)
Cytopathology (Fundamentals of Biomedical Science) Biomedical scientists are the foundation of modern healthcare, from cancer screening to diagnosing HIV, from blood transfusion for surgery to food poisoning and infection control. Without biomedical scientists, the diagnosis of disease, the evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment, and research into the causes and cures of disease would not be possible.

The Fundamentals of Biomedical Science series is written to reflect the challenges of practicing biomedical science today. It draws together essential basic science with insights into laboratory practice to show how an understanding of the biology of disease is coupled to the analytical approaches that lead to diagnosis.

Assuming only a minimum of prior knowledge, the series reviews the full range of disciplines to which a Biomedical Scientist may be exposed - from microbiology to cytopathology to transfusion science. Alongside volumes exploring specific biomedical themes and related laboratory diagnosis, an overarching Biomedical Science Practice volume gives a grounding in the professional and experimental skills with which any Biomedical Scientist must be equipped.

The series
DT Understands the complex roles of Biomedical Scientists in the modern practice of medicine.
DT Understands the development needs of employers and the Profession.
DT Addresses the need for understanding of a range of fundamental sciences in the context of Biomedicine.
DT Places the theoretical aspects of Biomedical Science in their practical context.

Cytopathology provides a broad-ranging overview of the microscopic study of normal and abnormal cells, which embraces the latest imaging and visualization methods to study the structure of cells.

Written with the needs of the biomedical scientist centre-stage, it provides a firm grounding in normal cell structure, and the abnormal features that are indicative of different clinical conditions. It also explains how screening programmes can be used to detect changes early, giving an invaluable opportunity for treatment regimes to be implemented in a timely way.

Crucially, it demonstrates throughout how an understanding of cellular physiology underpins the key investigations carried out by a biomedical scientist to forge a clear link between science and practice.

Online Resource Centre
The Online Resource Centre to accompany Cytopathology features:

For registered adopters of the book:
DT Figures from the book, available to download

For students:

21st Century Complete Medical Guide to Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma - Authoritative Government Documents and Clinical References for Patients and ... on Diagnosis and Treatment Options
21st Century Complete Medical Guide to Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma - Authoritative Government Documents and Clinical References for Patients and ... on Diagnosis and Treatment Options This up-to-date and comprehensive CD-ROM provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on lung cancer and mesothelioma: signs and symptoms, diagnosis, lab tests, treatment and management options, and ongoing clinical research. Every aspect of the disease is thoroughly covered. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.

For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor references and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. Documents from the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are included. In addition to disease-specific information, there is extensive coverage of the broad subject of cancer and its prevention and treatment along with current cancer research projects.

A unique feature is the inclusion of the results of a database search using the Combined Health Information Database (CHID).

Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing and difficult, we've also provided our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites" with links to 80 of the best sites for general health and medical information! By using weblinks built into the documents reproduced on the CD-ROM, you can quickly and easily check for the latest clinical updates directly from the government.

In all, the disc has over 47,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included on the CD.

Our CD-ROMs are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. (Information on this CD-ROM is not a substitute for professional medical advice; of course, readers are urged to consult with a professional health care provider for any suspected illness.) This book-on-a-disc makes a great reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals.

Lung Cancer (Facts)
Lung Cancer (Facts) Lung cancer is the most common cancer affecting the industrialized world and affects the lives of thousands of people, including patients' friends and family, every year. The most common cause of lung cancer is long-term exposure to tobacco smoke. The occurrence of lung cancer in non-smokers, who account for as many as 15% of cases, is often attributed to a combination of genetic factors, radon gas, asbestos, and air pollution, including secondhand smoke.

The aim of this book is to give, in a clear and simple way, succinct information about all aspects of this type of cancer, with a stress on the practical side of its treatment. The book also details how care is likely to be organized and what patients can do to help themselves, both if they have the disease and also how to stop smoking.

Fully updated for this third edition, the book includes information on getting the best treatment and living with cancer, both of which are new approaches to the disease in the UK.

Handbook of Evidence-Based Radiation Oncology
Handbook of Evidence-Based Radiation Oncology Building on the success of this book's first edition, Dr. Eric Hansen and Dr. Mack Roach have updated, revised, and expanded the Handbook of Evidence-based Radiation Oncology, a portable reference that utilizes evidence-based medicine as the basis for practical treatment recommendations and guidelines. Organized by body site, concise clinical chapters provide easy access to critical information. Important "pearls" of epidemiology, anatomy, pathology, and clinical presentation are highlighted. Key facets of the work-up are listed, followed by staging and/or risk classification systems. Treatment recommendations are discussed based on stage, histology, and/or risk classification. Brief summaries of key trials and studies provide rationale for the recommendations. Practical guidelines for radiation techniques are described. Finally, complications and follow-up guidelines are outlined. Updates from the first edition include brand new color figures and color contouring mini-atlases for head and neck, gastrointestinal, prostate, and gynecological tumors; redesigned tables for increased readability; new chapters on management of the neck and unknown primary, clinical radiobiology, and pediatric malignancies and benign conditions; and new appendices including the American College of Radiology guidelines for administration of IV contrast.

2009 Conquering Asbestos, Asbestosis, and Mesothelioma - The Empowered Patient's Complete Reference - Diagnosis, Treatment Options, Prognosis (Two CD-ROM Set) This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of asbestos, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. Topics covered include: major diseases, including cancer, heart and vascular disease, stroke, blood diseases and disorders, lung diseases, and neurological disorders such as dementia and epilepsy * CDC Health Topics A to Z, Foodborne Illnesses, Infants and Children, Injuries, Occupational Health, Older Adults, Women * CDC Travelers' Health - Destinations, Vaccinations, Diseases, Mosquito, Tick, Food, Water, Clinics, Yellow Book, Children, Airplanes, Cruise Ships, Special Needs, Relief Workers, * Dietary Guidelines * NIH A to Z from abnormalities to X-rays. Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we've also provided our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites" with updated links to 67 of the best sites for medical information!
